Phone accessory buying tips: check fit before you buy
By Smart Choice Technologies · Published 12 October 2026
A useful accessory should solve a specific problem: protect your phone, charge it reliably or make calls and recordings easier. Start with compatibility before looking at appearance.
Find your exact phone model
Check the model name in your phone’s settings and include it when asking about an accessory. Similar-looking phones can have different camera positions, button layouts and dimensions. A case made for one model may cover a microphone or leave a poor fit on another.
For a screen protector, check the size, camera cut-outs and whether it fits with your case. Ask whether fitting is included or whether you will need to install it yourself.
Match both ends of a charging cable
Check the port on your phone and the port on your charger. You may need USB-A to USB-C, USB-C to USB-C or a different connector. If you also want to transfer files, ask whether the cable supports data transfer rather than only charging.
A connector that fits does not establish charging speed. Confirm the phone, charger and cable capabilities together. USB-IF documents cable capabilities and USB Power Delivery separately; see its cable and connector guidance and USB charging guidance.
Choose a charger for your device
Ask which charging standard your phone supports and whether the charger matches it. Do not choose by the wattage printed on the listing alone. Check the wall plug, cable requirements and what is included in the package.
For a car charger, confirm compatibility with your vehicle’s power socket and how its output is shared when more than one device is connected. For a power bank, ask about its ports, output and size as well as its advertised capacity.
Choose audio accessories around your actual use
For calls, check microphone clarity and comfort. For music, consider fit, controls and how you will recharge the earphones. For video recording, confirm that a wireless microphone’s receiver connects to your phone and works with the app you intend to use.
If possible, test the accessory with your own device. A familiar brand name or a similar-looking connector is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Check the package and the total cost
Ask whether adapters, charging cables, spare ear tips or other pictured parts are included. Confirm colour, quantity and any warranty or return terms for the specific item. Include any collection or delivery charge in your comparison.
